Description
George Brown Petty’s pin up drawing of a young woman holding a phone while dressed in a pink gown with enlarged rabbit ears was the inspiration for Hugh Hefner’s
iconic Rabbit head logo. This is the only known photographic replication of that 1930’s “Petty Girl”drawing. The “Petty Girl” changed the concept of American beauty, as Playboy was to do starting in the 1950s. The “Petty Girl” featured a beautiful woman with elongated limbs and generously propotioned, often dangling a telephone with a flirtatious smile. Hefner explained the rabbit was chosen as the magazine’s logo because “the bunny, in America has a sexual meaning…it’s a fresh animal, shy, vivacious, jumping … sexy.” The bunny represents a man who lives a life devoted to the pursuit of pleasure. From Hefner inspiration Playboy Art Director Art Paul created the now famous bunny head with a butterfly tie…humorous, sexy, and fun loving.
